"Situation. Behaviour. Impact." is a mnemonic. It is not a skill. Teaching the mnemonic before the skill is why your managers still avoid the conversation.
The interaction we use instead
Three-screen scenario. Slide 1: the context (a missed deadline, second time this quarter). Slide 2: pick what you'd actually say first — four options, all plausible. Slide 3: see how the team member reacts. Replay with a different opener.
Only after the learner has felt the cost of the wrong opening do we surface "SBI" — and they remember it because they know what it solves.
Why this works
The discomfort of failing a scenario is what makes the model stick. A model handed out before the failure is just one more bullet point.
