If accessibility is the last step, it's the cheapest tickbox and the worst experience. Build it in from the start and it disappears as a cost line.
The day-one checklist
- Keyboard-only nav — every interaction must be operable with Tab, Enter, Space, arrows. Test it before writing CSS.
- Colour contrast — WCAG AA on every text element. WebAIM contrast checker in the design phase, not after.
- Captions on every video — open captions for short clips, closed for long. Never decorative-only audio.
- Alt text for every meaningful image — and empty alt for the decorative ones (this matters too).
- Focus rings on — designers love hiding them. Don't. Make them branded.
What this earns you
WCAG 2.2 AA compliance, larger audience, lower retake rates, and a course that works on the laptop in a noisy warehouse with the screen reader on. Same effort. Better course.
